Kim Carson’s journey is a tapestry of resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to shatter barriers hindering marginalized communities in the tech industry. Her story is one of staunch dedication shaped by her personal experiences, a relentless pursuit of equity, and an unyielding vision for a future where diversity and innovation intertwine to shape a better world.
Recognized as gifted at a very young age, Kim realized a transformative experience as she was ushered into a predominantly white school district, where she gained access to advanced classes and state-of-the-art resources. It was there, amidst stark educational disparities, that Kim’s eyes were opened to the glaring inequalities within the education system. Visits to her cousins' urban neighborhoods revealed a poignant truth: their inherent talents were no different from hers; only their opportunities varied. This realization planted the seed of a profound mission—to bridge these gaps, providing equal opportunities for all.
Inspiration struck in Kim’s adolescent years when she encountered Lt. Uhura from Star Trek, the first black woman she saw in a role of respect, a beacon of empowerment and authority. Uhura’s image became a catalyst, igniting Kim’s aspirations to become an aerospace engineer. Her zeal led her to an opportunity at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station, which partnered with the Boy Scouts for the Civil Air Patrol program. Yet girls were excluded. This setback was compounded by a Calculus 1 teacher who, due to her race and gender, doubted Kim’s potential. These rejections, instead of deterring her, fueled an unyielding commitment to rewrite the narrative for future generations.
Venturing into adulthood, Kim began to develop what would ultimately be described as a remarkable educational background. First, she earned a double major in political science and German from Susquehanna University. Subsequently, she became a Singularity University Executive Program alum and a Stanford GSB Leaders in Technology Fellow.
From there, Kim’s trajectory led her to Silicon Valley during the dotcom era. Here, she carved unique roles in technology, challenging norms and pushing boundaries. As a result of her hard work and determination, Kim was invited to do speaking engagements at renowned events like FETC, ASCD, and TEDx. She did not view these as mere presentations but rather fervent calls to action. With each keynote, she aimed to inspire, inform, and empower her audience, instilling in them a sense of excitement and possibility. She sought to transform challenges into solutions, steering the conversation from problems to proactive change.
By 2023, the world was grappling with significant global challenges. This prompted Kim to found Parallax Futures, a nonprofit organization that aims to break down barriers and to create a new job category of conceptual technologists, infusing the tech industry with multi-dimensional diversity. Parallax Futures focuses largely on AI, targeting the often-overlooked corners of the tech sector. However, it isn’t just meant to be an organization; it’s intended to be a movement, a beacon illuminating the path toward a more inclusive, innovative future. Kim’s vision is to create opportunities for those marginalized due to circumstances beyond their control. As a non-technical Black woman in tech, she understands the isolation that comes with holding onto hope. Her remedy? Ensuring everyone has a seat at the table, amplifying collective voices for positive change.
With over fifteen years of leadership spanning research, operations, strategy, finance, and business development, Kim stands as a paragon of exemplary leadership across diverse sectors. Her passion lies in creating spaces where individuals can harness their unique talents for the community’s benefit. From organizing neighborhood talent shows to leading teams toward shared goals, she finds joy in aligning individuals' unique characteristics to foster collective strength. Her unwavering belief in technology’s potential to make us better humans has fueled her unrelenting drive. Today, Kim lives in Berkeley, California, with her teen son, Jordan, and her three-year-old labradoodle, Snoopy.
